20 Heller Zell am See

One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced in the early 1920s, this 20 Heller note from Zell am See was printed locally by J. Sochor — a small regional printer whose name appears on several Salzburg-area emergency issues from the same period. The Notgeld wave that swept Austria after 1918 was driven by a severe shortage of small coin, itself a direct consequence of wartime metal hoarding and the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system.

Zell am See issued multiple denominations through this program. Local printing meant variable quality and short production runs, which paradoxically drove collector demand even at the time of issue.
