Opmerkingen

Zelking is a small village in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized communities it resorted to printing its own Notgeld during the postwar currency emergency — small-denomination emergency money intended to address the chronic shortage of coins that plagued Austria between 1919 and 1921. What distinguishes this particular issue is the involvement of Walter Prinzl of nearby Melk, credited both as designer and etcher, which is uncommon; most municipal Notgeld of this type was farmed out to commercial artists with no local connection.

Hermes Buch- und Kunstdruckerei, operating out of Vienna's 17th district, handled a significant volume of Lower Austrian municipal Notgeld during this period.
