Struck at Tabora in German East Africa during the East African campaign, these pieces were produced under the authority of Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck's forces as British pressure severed supply lines from Germany entirely. The colonial administration had been cut off from imported coin blanks, so local brass — largely sourced from cartridge cases and other available material — was pressed into service. Composition varies noticeably between surviving examples as a direct consequence.
Tabora fell to Belgian and British forces in September 1916, only months after this issue entered circulation.
