20 Heller Senftenberg

Senftenberg is a small market town in Lower Austria's Krems district, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the coinage shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg Empire and the fragmentation of its monetary system. Local authorities were legally permitted to issue small-denomination emergency currency, and hundreds of Gemeinden did exactly that, producing notes that ranged from the purely functional to the elaborately decorative.
