Senftenberg is a small market town in Lower Austria's Krems district, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the coinage shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg Empire and the fragmentation of its monetary system. Local authorities were legally permitted to issue small-denomination emergency currency, and hundreds of Gemeinden did exactly that, producing notes that ranged from the purely functional to the elaborately decorative.
The JPR0993d suffix indicates this is one of several distinct variants in the Senftenberg series, distinguished by color, text, or serial differences documented by Jaksch.
