Reichental im Mühlkreis is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller notgeld dates from the period when Austrian local governments were effectively forced to print their own small-denomination emergency money due to a catastrophic coin shortage that began during the First World War and persisted well into the early 1920s. The central authorities simply could not supply enough fractional currency to meet everyday transaction needs, so thousands of Gemeinden across Austria issued their own paper.
