Pöndorf is a small village in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities after the collapse of the Habsburg economy left small change essentially unavailable. Reklame Puka in Linz handled a considerable volume of these local emergency issues, functioning as a regional printer of convenience rather than a specialist currency house. The designer credit to L. Haase is unusual — most comparable village issues from this period went uncredited entirely.
Signed by both the Bürgermeister and Vizebürgermeister, which was a legal formality required to give the scrip any standing with the local population.
