Pöchlarn is a small town on the Danube in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in the early 1920s, it issued its own Notgeld when the postwar coinage shortage made small-change transactions nearly impossible. These local emergency issues were authorized under the broader collapse of the Habsburg monetary system, with the new Austrian republic unable to supply sufficient fractional currency to keep ordinary commerce moving.
The Seliger/Thonau credit is worth noting — this pairing appears across several Lower Austrian municipal issues of the period, suggesting a regional printing arrangement rather than bespoke production for each town.
