Pischelsdorf's 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal notgeld issued after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities without adequate coin for daily transactions. The village-level issuer here is telling: Gemeinde Pischelsdorf had no banking infrastructure to draw on, and the practical authority to issue emergency scrip devolved all the way down to the local mayor's office. Franz Preiser's signature as the responsible signatory reflects exactly that — this is municipal administration improvising under monetary collapse.
Auer & Strauss were a Viennese printing firm who handled a significant volume of this lower-tier notgeld work in 1920.
