Mitterndorf im Steirischen Salzkammergut issued its own emergency paper during the profound coin shortage that gripped Austria following World War I — the Heller notgeld phenomenon was hyperlocal by design, with thousands of individual communes producing their own fractional scrip between 1919 and 1921. Paul Gerin in Vienna was one of the busiest printers of this material, producing runs for municipalities across Styria and beyond.
The Salzkammergut region's long association with salt mining gave even minor villages an administrative identity robust enough to back such issues, however nominally.
