Mitterndorf im Steirischen Salzkammergut issued its own emergency paper during the profound coin shortage that gripped Austria following World War I — the Heller notgeld phenomenon was hyperlocal by design, with thousands of individual communes producing their own fractional scrip between 1919 and 1921.
