Melk issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — during the postwar coin shortage that left Austrian towns functionally unable to make everyday transactions. This second series piece was printed by Hermes in Vienna's 17th district, a press that handled a significant volume of municipal Notgeld commissions during this period.
Walter Hrinzelmein's design credit is worth noting: named local designers on Notgeld are relatively uncommon, as many municipalities simply commissioned standardized layouts from the printer directly.
