Vorderseitenbeschreibung The obverse is printed in dark blue on a plain cream paper ground with a simple rectangular border composed of small ornamental squares. The denomination '20' appears in large numerals at upper left and upper right flanking the central text 'Heller' in gothic blackletter script, with '(zwanzig)' in parentheses below. The central body carries the issuing authority text 'Gutschein der Stadtgemeinde Linz' followed by a three-line guarantee clause, a series letter 'A' at lower left, and the mayoral signature line reading 'Der Bürgermeister: Josef Dametz'. A validity notice 'Gültig nur bis einschließlich 30. Juni 1920.' appears at the top, and an anti-counterfeiting warning runs along the bottom edge.

Rückseitenbeschreibung The reverse is printed in dark blue on plain cream paper and carries a bold gothic blackletter heading 'Gutschein' at the top, followed by 'der Stadtgemeinde Linz über' in smaller script. The denomination '20 Heller 20' with '(zwanzig)' appears centrally, set against a lightly printed vignette of the Linz city coat of arms showing a tower with flanking decorative foliage. Below, a lengthy explanatory text paragraph details the legal basis for the issue, referencing the Gemeinderatsbeschluss of 16 January 1920, the total authorized issue of 400,000 Kronen, and the redemption period from 1 June to 30 June 1920 at municipal cash offices.

Anmerkungen

Austrian municipal notgeld of this type was produced to address the chronic small-change shortage that persisted well into the 1920s — the postwar inflation had driven coins out of circulation and the central authorities were slow to respond. Linz, like hundreds of other Austrian towns, simply printed its own. The Stadtgemeinde issues differ from the collectible "Serienscheine" sold to tourists and philatelists: these were functional emergency currency, issued to actually circulate and be redeemed.

Josef Dametz served as Bürgermeister of Linz from 1919 to 1928, which brackets the issue dates neatly. His signature here is an administrative authorization, not a banking one.
