Laa an der Thaya issued these Heller notes in 1920 as part of the vast Austrian municipal Notgeld wave — a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left small-denomination currency almost entirely absent from everyday transactions. Hundreds of Austrian towns issued their own emergency paper in this period, and the sheer volume produced means most common types survive in quantity.
The JPR493b designation within the Jaksc catalog suggests a variant within the Laa an der Thaya series, likely differing in a control detail, paper stock, or overprint from the 'a' type. Worth confirming against the Jaksc reference before attributing.
