A heraldic shield cartouche dated 1600, bearing a fish and quill motif, is placed centrally below the vignette, flanked by the validity and guarantee text at lower right with a facsimile mayoral signature. An anti-counterfeiting notice runs along the bottom margin within a double-rule border. |

Kremsmünster's 20 Heller notgeld belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency issued in the early postwar years, when coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. The Marktgemeinde — a market town, not a city — had no special banking infrastructure, so like hundreds of similar communities across Upper Austria it printed its own fractional scrip to keep local commerce moving.
The JPR reference places this within the Jaksch/Pick notgeld cataloguing system, which documented thousands of such issues. Condition varies enormously across surviving examples; these small paper pieces were never meant to last.
