Opmerkingen

Kopfing is a small parish commune in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the acute small-change famine that gripped Austria after the First World War. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities across the country issuing their own emergency currency — Notgeld — to keep local trade functioning when coins simply disappeared from circulation.

The Bürgermeister's signature, here from one Steiner, was the legal authentication that gave these notes whatever local confidence they carried. Beyond the parish boundary, they were worthless.
