Kirchdorf an der Krems issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that gripped Austria in the years immediately following the collapse of the Habsburg empire. Municipal and market communities across Upper Austria printed small-denomination notes to fill the gap left by hoarded and melted coinage, and Kirchdorf's series was among hundreds produced at the local level, often with minimal printing infrastructure.
