Hofkirchen an der Trattnach is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Notgeld issued by Austrian municipalities after the First World War as small-denomination coinage all but vanished from circulation. The Austrian Heller itself was abolished in 1924 when the Schilling replaced the Krone, rendering these local emergency issues worthless within a few years of printing.
Many Austrian Notgeld pieces from this period were printed in short runs specifically for collectors — a practice that became so widespread it undermined the original emergency purpose entirely.
