| Descrizione del dritto | Printed entirely in red on white paper, the obverse is enclosed within a decorative letterpress border of interlaced foliate and geometric ornaments. A bold chevron-shaped banner across the upper centre bears the inscription 'KURSTADT GMUNDEN', flanked on either side by large denomination numerals '20 H'; the municipal coat of arms of Gmunden is centred below the chevron, accompanied by two six-pointed stars. The lower portion carries a multi-line redemption text and the issuing date, with the mayor's printed signature line at the foot. |

Gmunden's Heller notgeld issues belong to the wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Austria in the years immediately following the collapse of the Habsburg economy — the central government simply could not produce small-denomination coinage fast enough to meet demand. The Salzkammergut-Druckerei, a local press, handled production entirely within the town, which was unusual only in that Gmunden had the facility to do so where many comparable municipalities did not.
Bürgermeister Krackowizer's signature was applied as a validation of municipal authority, not as a functional security feature.
