Austrian Notgeld of this type was a direct consequence of the severe coin shortage that followed World War One. Municipal and local authorities across Austria were authorized to issue their own emergency small-change notes — Heller denominations being the most common — to fill the gap left by hoarded and melted coinage. Gaming, a small market town in Lower Austria's Erlauf valley, was among hundreds of municipalities that produced these issues in 1920.
The JPR0220a designation places this within the Jaksch cataloguing of Lower Austrian Notgeld. Series survival rates vary considerably by issuing locality; Gaming's output was modest enough that examples see occasional collector demand disproportionate to their original face value.
