Frankenmarkt is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities during the post-WWI economic collapse, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — to address the acute shortage of small change. The 1920 date places this squarely in the peak period of Austrian municipal Notgeld production, when hyperinflation and coin hoarding had effectively stripped low-denomination coinage from everyday commerce.
The print date of 30 April 1945 is worth pausing on. That is the day Hitler died in Berlin, and the final week of the Nazi regime in Austria. Why a 1920-dated Heller note was being printed on that specific date demands explanation that the catalog data alone cannot supply — whether these were reprints, backdated replacements, or a recording anomaly remains unclear.
