Baumgartenberg is a tiny Upper Austrian village whose Cistercian monastery had dominated local life since the twelfth century. Like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued Notgeld to counter the acute small-coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system — a problem that plagued the new republic well into the early 1920s.
The print run figures attached to this note — 20,000 each for two consecutive series numbers — are unusually well-documented for a municipal issue of this scale.
