Bad Ischl's notgeld issues of 1920 were among the more locally distinctive of the Austrian spa town series — the municipality printed its own emergency small change specifically because Heller coinage had effectively vanished from circulation by that point, hoarded or melted as the old Habsburg monetary order collapsed. The town had unusually strong administrative identity for its size, partly a consequence of its long association with the imperial court; Franz Joseph spent decades of summers there, and the municipal apparatus retained a certain self-sufficiency.
The 75 × 49 mm format is on the smaller end for Austrian notgeld, which tends to crowd a lot of local imagery into limited space.
