Gosau's 1920 Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Austrian municipal notgeld issued after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities without workable change. Gosau — a remote Alpine village in the Salzkammergut — issued these necessity notes through local authority rather than any banking institution, with Josef Posch signing as the responsible municipal official.
The 0251b designation in the Jaksch catalog indicates a variant within the Gosau series, likely differing from the 'a' type in ink color, paper stock, or overprint detail. Village-level notgeld from this region was typically printed in very small runs and redeemed quickly once Austrian National Bank coinage resumed circulation.
