Comments

Cham issued this Goldmark-denominated emergency bond during the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1923, when municipalities across Germany were printing their own quasi-currency to keep local commerce functioning. Denominating it in Goldmark rather than Papiermark was a deliberate hedge — by late 1923 the Papiermark was essentially worthless, and issuers had learned that any obligation expressed in inflated currency would be repudiated on redemption as a rounding error.

Josef Wein's print shop produced it locally, which accounts for the modest production values. The watermarked stock is notable for a small-town emergency issue — most comparable Notgeld from minor Bavarian municipalities dispensed with security paper entirely.
