The Democratic Republic of the Congo has operated one of the most prolific novelty bullion programs of any nation since the early 2000s, licensing its sovereignty to European minting houses — primarily in Austria and Belgium — to produce coins that will never circulate and bear no meaningful relationship to the country's actual monetary system. This piece is one of hundreds issued under that arrangement.
The grey wolf was extirpated from most of Western Europe by the early twentieth century, though natural recolonization from Italian populations has been documented across France, Germany, and the Low Countries since the 1990s.
