The Phorusrhacidae — more commonly called "terror birds" — were apex predators across South America for roughly 60 million years, reaching heights of up to three meters. Their connection to the Congo is purely commercial: the Democratic Republic of Congo has become a favored issuing authority for the international bullion and novelty collector market precisely because it imposes few restrictions on what themes its mint contracts can carry.
