The Phorusrhacidae — more commonly called "terror birds" — were apex predators across South America for roughly 60 million years, reaching heights of up to three meters. Their connection to the Congo is purely commercial: the Democratic Republic of Congo has become a favored issuing authority for the international bullion and novelty collector market precisely because it imposes few restrictions on what themes its mint contracts can carry. This coin was not produced for Congolese circulation and almost certainly never entered it.
