| Obverse description | The obverse features a densely inscribed field without a central portrait, displaying Chinese characters and Manchu script arranged in vertical columns across the face of the coin. The central legend reads 光緒元寶 (Guangxu Yuanbao, meaning 'Guangxu Original Currency') flanked by Manchu script equivalents. The upper arc bears the provincial inscription 江南省造 (Made in Kiangnan Province), while the lower field gives the cyclical year and the weight standard 庫平一錢四分四釐 (Kuping 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens). The entire design is contained within a beaded border, with no effigy or central device, consistent with early Qing provincial machine-struck silver coinage. |
