Additional information

Kiangnan's silver fen issues of the late 1890s emerged directly from the Self-Strengthening Movement's push to modernize Chinese coinage infrastructure — the Kiangnan Arsenal mint, already producing military hardware, was retooled for coin production in 1897. Early strikes like these pre-date the cyclical date system introduced on later Kiangnan issues, which makes precise year attribution within the 1898–1900 window dependent almost entirely on die characteristics rather than inscribed dates.

The Y#143a series carries documented varieties across at least four die marriages, with differences concentrated in the dragon's pearl and surrounding flame work — invisible in the catalog fields but consequential to specialists pricing individual examples.
