Reverse description The reverse features a bold, stylized portrait of the playwright Samuel Beckett occupying the left portion of the field, rendered in high relief with strong angular features characteristic of a modern engraved effigy. To the right, an evocative scene alludes to Beckett's seminal work 'Waiting for Godot', depicting two solitary figures standing beneath a bare, leafless tree, suggestive of existential themes central to the play. The denomination '20' and the currency unit 'EURO' are inscribed in the upper right field.

Additional information

Issued as part of Ireland's ongoing gold commemorative program, this piece marks the centenary of Beckett's birth in Foxrock, County Dublin, in 1906. Beckett spent much of his adult life in Paris, wrote much of his major work in French, and famously translated it back into English himself — a biographical detail that complicated any simple claim of national ownership over his work, making his appearance on an Irish coin a quietly loaded choice.
