Central field displays the colonial arms of São Tomé and Príncipe: a Portuguese-style quartered shield bearing the five quinas of Portugal arranged in cross formation, surmounted by a Portuguese royal crown and flanked by an armillary sphere to the right, the base of the shield resting upon three wavy lines representing the sea. Two small floral ornaments flank the denomination at the lower field. The circular legend S. TOMÉ · E · PRÍNCIPE runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 20$00 appears across the lower field. The word PROVA (proof/pattern) is incuse-stamped vertically to the left of the shield, identifying this piece as a trial strike. The engraver's signature M. NORTE appears at the lower right of the inner circle. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

The armillary sphere, a historic symbol of Portuguese maritime exploration, occupies the majority of the inner field. The circular legend REPUBLICA · PORTUGUESA runs along the upper periphery, interrupted by a beaded inner border, while the date 1971 appears at the base flanked by small floral ornaments. The overall composition is enclosed within a beaded outer border consistent with the obverse. |
