TOMÉ · E · PRÍNCIPE runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 20$00 appears across the lower field. The word PROVA (proof/pattern) is incuse-stamped vertically to the left of the shield, identifying this piece as a trial strike. The engraver's signature M. NORTE appears at the lower right of the inner circle. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

The armillary sphere, a historic symbol of Portuguese maritime exploration, occupies the majority of the inner field. The circular legend REPUBLICA · PORTUGUESA runs along the upper periphery, interrupted by a beaded inner border, while the date 1971 appears at the base flanked by small floral ornaments. The overall composition is enclosed within a beaded outer border consistent with the obverse. |
