George II was restored to the Greek throne in 1935 following a rigged plebiscite — official returns claimed over 97% in favor, a figure few historians accept. This gold issue followed several years later, with production delayed by the political instability of the Metaxas dictatorship that effectively governed Greece from 1936 onward. The coin was struck in 1940, the same year Italy invaded through Albania, making it one of the last gold issues Greece would produce before occupation suspended normal monetary functions entirely.
