Saladin's appearance on a Liberian commemorative issue is a product of the 1990s novelty coin boom, during which the Central Bank of Liberia — a country with no historical connection to the medieval sultan — licensed a flood of silver rounds aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. Liberia became one of the most prolific issuers of this type of thematic commemorative during the decade, producing dozens of unrelated historical subjects for export sale.
Saladin died in Damascus in 1193, having spent his personal treasury so completely on charitable giving that his estate could not cover funeral costs.
