In the left foreground, the multi-tiered arched facade of the Colosseum dominates the lower portion of the design, while the Spanish Steps with their sweeping staircase and the twin-towered church of Trinita dei Monti occupy the right middle ground. At centre, a large classical sculptural figure — evoking the seated river god from the Fontana dei Fiumi — is depicted within a columned architectural niche, with the inscription CLEMENS XII PONT. MAX. ANNO MDCCXXIII appearing on the entablature above. The city name ROMA is inscribed in the upper left field, and the denomination $20 appears in the lower exergue. |
