| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship at sea with a rising sun on the horizon and a palm tree to the right, above a plough and a dove in flight, all enclosed within a decorative shield surmounted by a scroll bearing the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery in bold raised letters, repeated in smaller characters along the lower rim of the shield. The date 2002 is divided either side of the arms, with '20' to the left and '02' to the right. A toothed border of raised dashes frames the entire design. |

| Reverse description | A detailed three-quarter broadside view of the Soviet P36 class 4-8-4 steam locomotive is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field, the engine depicted at rest with its prominent driving wheels, ornate wheel splashers, and tall smokestack clearly delineated. Bare deciduous trees rise behind the locomotive, lending a scenic, wintry atmosphere to the composition. The arc legend LEGENDS OF THE RAILS curves along the left and upper periphery, while the locomotive class designation 'P36' 4-8-4 is inscribed vertically along the right side of the field. The denomination 20 DOLLARS appears in the lower exergue, flanked by decorative foliate ornaments. |
