At the base of the field, the denomination 20 DOLLARS is inscribed, flanked by a small Victory torch-and-V motif at lower left, and the engraver's initials HP appear at the truncation. Issued in 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, this coin commemorates the moment — May 8, 1945 — when Germany's unconditional surrender ended six years of war in Europe. Canada's contribution to that outcome was substantial: over one million Canadians served, and the country had built the third-largest Allied naval fleet by war's end. The Royal Canadian Mint has issued numerous V-E Day commemoratives over the decades, but the 75th anniversary cycle drew particular attention given the dwindling number of surviving veterans who witnessed the original celebrations in person.
