Issued to mark the centenary of the First World War's end, this piece belongs to a broader RCM commemorative program that ran through the 2014–2018 period covering major WWI anniversaries. George V reigned throughout the entire conflict, having acceded in 1910 — old enough to remember the scramble for Africa, young enough to see the war reshape every empire involved, including his own. Canada's participation was substantial and largely self-directed; by 1917, Ottawa was pressing for an independent voice at the peace table before the war had even ended.
The .9999 fineness is characteristic of RCM collector issues from this decade, a step above the .999 standard most sovereign mints were using at the time.
