The pysanka — the Ukrainian Easter egg decorated through a wax-resist dyeing process — carries particular weight in 2023, the year this coin was issued, as Canada's roughly 1.4 million Ukrainian diaspora grappled with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022. The Royal Canadian Mint has produced pysanka-themed issues before, but the timing of this one is unmistakably pointed.
The egg-shaped flan accounts for the non-circular dimensions — a production challenge the RCM has pursued across several shaped-coin programs since the early 2010s.
