Issued to mark the fortieth anniversary of Haile Selassie's coronation, this coin was struck during the brief window when Ethiopia still functioned as an imperial state — three years before the Derg coup that would eventually topple him in 1974. The jubilee itself was a carefully orchestrated affair, with delegations attending from across Africa and the West at a moment when Selassie was positioning Addis Ababa as the diplomatic capital of pan-African politics, having secured the OAU headquarters there in 1963.
Minted by the British Royal Mint on contract, the .900 gold series from this jubilee issue spans several denominations, all produced in limited quantities primarily for collectors and foreign dignitaries rather than domestic circulation.
