Fort Sumter entered Confederate hands on April 14, 1861, after a 34-hour bombardment — and remarkably, not a single Union soldier died in combat during the assault itself. Two died the following day when a cannon misfired during the evacuation salute. Liberia's prolific commemorative program around the millennium leaned heavily on American Civil War subjects, producing a string of silver issues for the collector market with no domestic circulation intended.
