The 2018 Royal Canadian Mint commemorative program drew heavily on Norse settlement archaeology, specifically the L'Anse aux Meadows site in Newfoundland — the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America, occupied around 1000 AD and rediscovered by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad in 1960.
