The 2018 Royal Canadian Mint commemorative program drew heavily on Norse settlement archaeology, specifically the L'Anse aux Meadows site in Newfoundland — the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America, occupied around 1000 AD and rediscovered by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad in 1960. Canada's claim to this history is geographically legitimate in a way few nations can match for Viking-related coinage.
