The sea otter recovery along Canada's Pacific coast is one of the more remarkable wildlife stories of the twentieth century — hunted to regional extinction by the maritime fur trade, the animals were reintroduced to British Columbia's coast from Alaskan populations beginning in 1969 and 1970. The RCM has returned to the species repeatedly in its bullion and collector series, though this issue's tri-metal plating treatment — combining standard rhodium, black rhodium, and selective gold — reflects a finishing technique the mint developed and refined through the late 2010s to simulate depth and contrast without enamel.
