| Obverse description | The obverse bears the fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by engraver Susan Taylor, depicting the Queen in right-facing profile at approximately 77 years of age, uncrowned and bare-headed. The portrait shows Her Majesty wearing a necklace and drop earrings, rendered in fine relief against a flat field. The peripheral legend reads ELIZABETH II CANADA D·G·REGINA, with the sovereign's title and country name distributed around the upper and lower portions of the coin's circumference. |

Lake Superior holds roughly 10% of the world's surface fresh water, a fact that drove decades of boundary disputes between the United States and Canada well into the twentieth century. The 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty established the International Joint Commission partly to manage competing claims on Superior's tributaries — a diplomatic arrangement still operative today.
