Saint Kitts and Nevis became fully independent from Britain on September 19, 1983 — one of the last Eastern Caribbean territories to do so — and this proof issue was struck to mark that occasion. The federation retained Elizabeth II as head of state, an arrangement that continues to this day. KM#2a distinguishes the silver proof from the cupro-nickel circulation strike (KM#2), both sharing the same design but issued for entirely different audiences.
