| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central design features a two-masted sailing schooner under full sail on stylised waves, set against an outlined silhouette map of the islands of Saint Christopher and Nevis. To the upper right, a detailed compass rose with cardinal and intercardinal points is depicted in the field. In the lower right, an oval cartouche contains a representation of a rock formation, likely Nevis Peak. The date 1983 appears in the lower field. The circumferential legend, separated by raised dots, reads INDEPENDENCE · ST. CHRISTOPHER & NEVIS · SEPTEMBER 19th · TWENTY DOLLARS around the periphery. |

Saint Kitts and Nevis became fully independent from Britain on September 19, 1983 — one of the last Eastern Caribbean territories to do so — and this proof issue was struck to mark that occasion. The federation retained Elizabeth II as head of state, an arrangement that continues to this day. KM#2a distinguishes the silver proof from the cupro-nickel circulation strike (KM#2), both sharing the same design but issued for entirely different audiences.
