The central panel features a bold high-relief portrait of Pope John Paul II facing slightly left, vested in papal vestments with a mozzetta and pectoral cross, set within a radiant sunburst halo; the circular legend SANCTUS IOANNES PAULUS II surrounds the portrait, and the canonization date 27.04.2014 appears in the lower exergue within a decorative cartouche. The left panel contains a full-color reproduction of the icon of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa, framed by ornate gilded Gothic tracery with cross motifs at the corners. John Paul II was canonized on April 27, 2014, alongside John XXIII — the first time in modern history two popes were canonized simultaneously. The ceremony drew an estimated 800,000 pilgrims to St. Peter's Square, the largest gathering in Rome since the pontiff's own funeral in 2005.
Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand dollar as legal tender makes it a convenient issuing authority for commemorative programs with no connection to the island itself. KM# 204 is one of dozens of such issues produced under that arrangement for the collector market.
