The left panel contains a full-color reproduction of the icon of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa, framed by ornate gilded Gothic tracery with cross motifs at the corners. John Paul II was canonized on April 27, 2014, alongside John XXIII — the first time in modern history two popes were canonized simultaneously. The ceremony drew an estimated 800,000 pilgrims to St. Peter's Square, the largest gathering in Rome since the pontiff's own funeral in 2005.
