The obverse is dominated by a portrait vignette of Mary Reibey (1777–1855) set against a red and orange guilloche underprint, accompanied by an intaglio rendering of the schooner Mercury — built in Sydney in 1805–06 — and a vignette of the George Street, Sydney building she owned. The polymer substrate incorporates a clear window as an integral security element. Inscriptions include the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS and the legal tender clause THIS AUSTRALIAN NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA AND ITS TERRITORIES. |

Additional design elements include a medical diagram captioned Where Does It Hurt? and a vignette of Flynn as a camel-mounted boundary rider. The denomination and country name are lettered in intaglio. |
